Storage is often categorized according to 'Tiers' that are differentiated by their performance and reliability. Tier-1 storage represents the fastest and most reliable products; they are also the most expensive. Tier-4 storage, also known as archival storage, is the slowest and typically tape-based.
  
The founders of FireRock pioneered the concept of Tier-0 storage with their first design of a distributed storage cache in 2001. The founders were recognized by the AeA with an award for “Innovation in High Tech Product/Technology.” Tier-0 storage is now gaining awareness and acceptance where superior performance is the primary goal. Tier-0 storage is also being recognized as a "green" alternative to forklift upgrades of older, slower storage systems.
